A century of research on the classical locality of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis

In 1904 Eugène Dubois published the first report on fossil mammals from the vicinity of Tegelen. After a century of research the clay-pits from the area are known as a classical locality for Villafranchian mammals. Antje Schreuder's work was particularly important for making the fossils from Tegelen known. Her papers, however, also indicate some problems. The large mammal fossils were gathered by clay-workers in the local ceramic industry, and the fragmentary nature of the fossils is partly caused by injudicious handling while extracting the bones from the clay. A crinoid crown from the Wenlock (Silurian) of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England Naturalis

The specific diversity of fossil crinoids from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation at Dudley, Worcestershire, and in Shropshire differ by an order of magnitude. The latter are relatively depauperate and include only about six nominal species. Over 165 years ago, a specimen from Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, was identified as Cyathocrinites tuberculatus Miller (= the taxocrinid flexible Protaxocrinus tuberculatus (Miller)). This specimen, although indifferently preserved, is distinct from other Silurian crinoids of the British Isles and is described herein as a monobathrid camerate, Macrostylocrinus? jefferiesi sp. nov. The Palaeozoic echinoderms of the British Isles are most diverse in the Silurian and Lower Carboniferous. This guide discusses and illustrates members of all major groups of echinoderms, apart from the crinoids, from the Silurian of these islands. Groups considered include the echinoids (five taxa), ophiuroids (ten taxa) and asteroids (thirteen taxa), and the extinct ophiocistioids (three species) and rhombiferan cystoids (nine species).

A Late Cretaceous gastropod homing scar (possibly ichnogenus Lacrimichnus) from southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis

An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. A Late Pliocene rodent fauna from Alozaina (Malaga, Spain) Naturalis

In this paper 11 species of rodents are described, that have been found in the fossiliferous karst fissure of Alozaina (Malaga, Spain). Three species of Stephanomys (Murinae) are present in this fauna: S. thaleri, S. minor, and the new species S. prietaensis. The latter exhibits a lesser degree of evolution than Stephanomys balcellsi from Valdeganga 7 and Islas Medas. The association of rodents from Alozaina is a new one for the Upper Pliocene in Spain. It indicates that the locality of Alozaina is younger than Moreda 1B and Rambla Seca Ab, and older than Valdeganga 7.

The conodont fauna extracted from a boulder in the Lorentz River (southern Irian Jaya) is described. Arguments are put forward that the elements of Distomodus dubius (Rhodes, 1953) sensu Jeppsson, 1972 are part of the apparatus of species of Coryssognathus Link & Druce, 1972, a genus that ontogenetically acquires an apparatus of multidenticulate elements on account of the phenomenon that one coniform element of each of the several (curvature-transition ?) series successively incorporates its - to that time independently growing - coniform neighbours within its lamellae. A Miocene molluscan faunule from Caucagua (Miranda State, Venezuela), with the description of a new species of Tryonia (Mollusca, Gastropoda) Naturalis

A molluscan faunule from the Miocene Cumaca Formation of the western margin of the Tuy Basin (Venezuela) is described. The fauna yields two species of freshwater snails and a single terrestrial snail species. Tryonia vivasi nov. spec. is described from the fauna, and its biogeographical significance is discussed.

A Miocene perspective on the evolution of the Amazonian biota Naturalis

Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region.

A Namurian brachiopod fauna from Meré (Province of Oviedo, Spain) Naturalis

An interesting brachiopod fauna from Namurian (Marsdenian?) deposits — provisionally named the Meré beds herein — is described. The fauna contains seven new species: Drahanorhynchus cantabricus, Anopliopsis? parva, Caenanoplia martinezi, Tornquistia scutiformis, Aseptella asturica, Kitakamithyris merensis, and Plicotorynifer lamellosus; and one new genus: Aseptella with the type species A. asturica. The material of a new productellid and a new ambocoeliid was too poor to give them formal names. The special character of this fauna — only a much older fauna from the Chappel Limestone of Texas (U.S.A.) being closely comparable — indicates special environmental conditions: presumably a soft, muddy bottom. A new early brachyuran (Crustacea, Decapoda) from the Middle Jurassic of northwest France, epibionts and ecological considerations Naturalis

The earliest known crabs are of Early and Middle Jurassic age; in general, they are rare. Here we describe a new species of homolodromioid from the late Bathonian of Sarthe (France), based on a single dorsal carapace, Tanidromites raboeufi n. sp. This specimen has mostly well-preserved cuticle, and shows two episkeletozoans (bryozoan colonies) on its dorsal side, which is unique amongst early brachyurans (Early and Middle Jurassic). These bryozoans are identified as juvenile colonies of the morphogenus Berenicea (sheet-like tubuluporines), typical encrusters of hard substrates. A new Late Ordovician erratic anthaspidellid sponge (Porifera) originating from Baltica Naturalis

The new anthaspidellid taxon Brevaspidella dispersa is erected for specimens recovered from the Late Ordovician sponge assemblages of the island of Gotland, Sweden and the Dutch-German border region. In the latter area, they are collected from Early Pleistocene fluvial deposits of the Baltic River System, whereas those from Gotland are part of Late Pleistocene glacial or fluvio-glacial deposits. The provenance of both assemblages is uncertain, but they probably originated from an Ordovician basin in the northern Baltic Sea or the Bothnian Gulf, west of Finland. A note on the Mandible of Aceratherium Acutirostratum (Deraniyagala) from Moruaret hill, Turkana district, Kenya Naturalis

The genus and species Turkanatherium acutirostratus was proposed by Deraniyagala (1951) for a skull, without the mandible, collected by Dr. H. B. S. Cooke, a member of the Wendell-Phillips Expedition to Africa in 1948, at Moruaret Hill (or Moruorot) near Losodok (or Lothidok) in the Turkana district, Kenya. The holotype is in the Colombo Museum, Ceylon. Dr. Deraniyagala has had the courtesy to send me a series of good photographs of the specimen to supplement his own descriptions and published figures, for which I am very grateful. A pygmy Stegodon from the middle Pleistocene of Eastern Java Naturalis

The material to be described below forms part of a collection of fossil vertebrates made by Dr. J. Cosijn North of Djetis and Perning in Eastern Java (Cosijn, 1931, 1932). The Cosijn collection has not yet been fully described, some preliminary identifications were made by the late Prof. Dr. J. H. F. Umbgrove (in Cosijn, 1931, pp. 118-119). The collection is preserved in the Geological Museum at Leiden ; I have previously described the remains of rhinoceros (Hooijer, 1946, pp. 3, 55, 73, and 76) and those of hippopotamus (Hooijer, 1950, pp. 66, 69-72, and 87-108). A redescription of the Stephanian species Callipteridium virginianum (Fontaine & White, 1880) comb. nov. and Alethopteris leonensis Wagner, 1964 Naturalis

An analysis of Alethopteris virginiana Fontaine & White from the lower Dunkard in the Appalachians of North America shows that three different taxa are likely to be represented in the initial illustration. The specific epithet ‘virginiana’ ought to be restricted to a form comparable to Callipteridium costei (Zeiller) Wagner, whereas the two other taxa are referred to pecopterid ferns. A neotype is proposed for Callipteridium virginianum (Fontaine & White) comb. nov. on the basis of topotypes. Zeiller’s illustration of ‘Alethopteris’ costei is reproduced for comparison. A remarkable new Middle Sandbian (Ordovician) hexactinellid sponge in Baltic erratics Naturalis

A new species of complex hexactinellid sponge, Haljalaspongia inaudita, is described from fluvially transported blocks found in northwestern Germany, near the Dutch border, but which probably originated from the eastern Baltic region. The heavily folded wall is composed of multiple spicule layers, including dermal and gastral layers of acanthohexactines, and a central layer of sub-parallel monaxons. The monaxial layer is lined on one side by a reticulate array of smooth monaxons. The sponge is difficult to assign to any known fossil or recent group, but shares some features with the dictyospongioid family Docodermatidae.

A remarkable Ordovician ostracod fauna from Orphan Knoll, Labrador Sea Naturalis

This paper deals with silicified ostracods obtained from material dredged from Orphan Knoll, a submerged continental remnant in the Labrador Sea. Thirteen determinable species, belonging to the suborders Palaeoecopina and Podocopina, had been found in the material. Two species are new, the rest are left in open nomenclature. Among the smooth shelled podocopines, ancestral Pachydomellidae are of special interest, viz. Aboilia Becker & Adamczak (type species A. blessi Becker & Adamczak). The ostracod species are thought to indicate an age of Middle to Late Ordovician and include forms with both North American and North European affinities. The larger part of the known material of the deer from Tegelen has served as the base of a reassesment of the taxonomic place of these deer. Comparison with Villafranchian deer from France and Spain makes clear that a great homogeneity exists in the Villafranchian deer.

A revision of the Pliocene and Quaternary Lutrinae from Europe Naturalis

In this paper, a revision of the Pliocene and Quaternary Lutrinae from Europe is presented. Such a revision, including fossil material, has not been published since the work of Pohle (1919). Three tribes within the Lutrinae are recognized: the Lutrini, the Aonyxini and the Enhydrini. The latter comprises both Enhydra and the Enhydriodon group. The genus Nesolutra, consisting of three insular species, is not retained. Two are included in Lutra and for N. ichnusae a new genus, Sardolutra, is proposed. The genus Isolalutra is not retained either. Its only species, I. cretensis, is included in the genus Lutrogale. Some new material of this species is described. A sirenian skeleton from the Miocene of Eibergen, province of Gelderland, The Netherlands: Metaxytherium cf. medium Desmarest Naturalis

A sirenian skeleton, the major part of which was excavated from Miocene deposits at Eibergen near Winterswijk, belongs to Metaxytherium. The temporal crests on the parietals are well separated. The foramen magnum is pointed above. The mandible has a downturned symphysial body with four shallow alveoli on each side. The wide mandibular canal opens some distance behind the alveolus of M3. There are alveoli for one premolar (P4) and for three molars (M1-M3). Only M2 dext. is preserved; it has four main cusps and some accessory cusplets. The humerus, the shaft portion of which is missing, has a wide and marked bicipital groove. The vertebrae, with the exception of the atlas, are fragmentary.
